※ February 2nd, Día de Santa María Candelaria, kicks off the year’s festivities with a deeply traditional celebration of Candlemas. Just 20 minutes from Tapachula, in the picturesque town of Tuxtla Chico, the Virgin of Candelaria is celebrated with processions that move over vibrant carpets of sawdust. Filled with music and dance, it draws you into the festive atmosphere from the very beginning of the celebration. This is a religious occasion, but if you are not religious it is a chance to spend time with others and admire the region’s living customs.
※ Festivities continue from March 7 to16 with Expo Feria Tapachula, the year’s most highly anticipated event, which fills the entire city with merriment. During the Expo Feria you can enjoy concerts, exhibitions, local cuisine, agricultural products, handicrafts, and a sampling of Soconusco’s pride and talent. This is the perfect time to enjoy artistic events and learn about the region’s cultural diversity.

Museo de Tapachula (MUTAP)

Visit this church dedicated to Saint Augustine, located right in the heart of downtown. Besides offering a moment of respite from the bustling city, you can check out its architecture. The church took around 100 years to be built–construction kicked off in 1794 and finished in 1895, thanks to its faithful parishioners.
