Celebrations Brimming with the Soul of Chiapas, Festivities You Must Experience when Visiting the Tuxtla Area
※ Fiesta Grande de Chiapa de Corzo, also known as the Fiesta Grande de Chiapas (Chiapas’ Big Festival), is both a popular and religious celebration that is held every year from January 4 to the 23. In addition to the processions, parades, and historical reenactments, there is the danza de los parachicos, a traditional dance that has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
※ Other important festivities include Carnaval Zoque Coiteco in Ocozocoautla and Corpus Christi in the town of Suchiapa. These events are held before and after Holy Week, respectively, and they bring the community together and help strengthen bonds between their members.

Zoomat
Zoológico Miguel Álvarez del Toro (Zoomat) is a living sanctuary for regional biodiversity. One of its kind, this zoo is home only to Chiapas’ endemic animals, including endangered species. Jaguars, tapirs, quetzals, horned guan, and spider monkeys are only some of the animals that live here.

Parque de la Marimba
Set in the heart of the city, this is an urban cultural space that honors the marimba, the state´s traditional instrument. The gazebo in the middle is a stage for marimba groups from Wednesday to Sunday. The park is a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, who come to enjoy the live music.

Miradores del Cañón del Sumidero
Cañon del Sumidero, an enormous canyon, is one of Mexico’s natural wonders that you have to see at least once in your life. Scenic overlooks such as La Ceiba, El Roblar, La Coyota, El Tepehuaje y Los Chiapa are found around 12.4 miles from Tuxtla on average and offer mind-blowing views of the canyon.
MUSART (Museo de Artesanías)
Museo de las Artesanías de Chiapas (MUSART) is a temple to folk art, where every corner tells the living history of Chiapas’ peoples. The handicrafts on display provide a journey for the senses through six permanent and one temporary exhibitions. Clay, textiles, amber, lacquer, and wood come to life in well-lit exhibition cases telling meaningful stories.

Calzada de las Personas Ilustres
This emblematic promenade is one of the city’s oldest and most traditional. Running through a thick forest, it welcomes visitors to the Museo y Jardín Botánico Dr. Faustino Mirando (Dr. Faustino Miranda Museum and Botanical Garden).
Along its 492.1 feet are important cultural spaces such as the Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia (Regional Anthropology and History Museum) and the Museo de Paleontología Eliseo Palacios Aguilera (Eliseo Palacios Aguilera Paleontology Museum). The planetarium is also nearby, so this is a great place to make a day of it.
Museo Chiapas de Ciencia y Tecnología and Sbeel Dinosaurios Trail
※ Two for one! Museo Chiapas de Ciencia y Tecnología (MUCH) (Chiapas’ Science and Technology Museum) and Sbeel Dinosarios (dinosaur) trail are found at the same location. The Science and Technology museum takes up most of the space formerly occupied by the Cerro Hueco prison. Today, it is where science and imagination come together in interactive exhibitions that cover everything from communications to energy. There are also workshops fostering kids’ and adults’ curiosity. This museum is a great place for the whole family.
※ Just beside MUCH is Sbeel Dinosaurios trail. It transports visitors to a pre-Hispanic era, where eleven robotic dinosaurs come to life with realistic sounds and movements. This tour, which starts by simulating the eruption of Chichón volcano and wraps up under the withering gaze of a tyrannosaurus, offers a one-of-a-kind educational adventure set in Chiapas’ beautiful natural scenery.
